Patients at Rooks county Health Center may find playing video games part of their care plan. Ron and Cindy Overlease donated a Nintendo Wii video gaming system to RCH for patient use.
Unlike other video games, a Wii requires the user to control the action on a television screen with a motion-sensitive remote control. The system offers different activity levels with games such as tennis, bowling, golf, baseball and boxing.
“We really appreciate the Overleases purchasing the system.” said Rachel Snyder, LPN and Activities Director at RCH. “It is especially exciting to be able to offer this fun activity for our skilled swingbed patients, who may have limited mobility, so they can get the therapeutic benefits of improving their endurance, strength and coordination.”
Research indicates that patients who use the Wii enjoy a variety of health benefits including a perceived decrease in pain and anxiety and an alleviation of stress, loneliness and isolation that often accompany a prolonged illness or injury. Patients are also able to enjoy the system with their visitors.
