Physical Therapy and Back Pain

Physical therapists are highly educated, licensed professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility.  Therapists plan an important role in treating back pain, but also in the prevention and risk reduction of pain.

Approximately one quarter of Americans report experiencing low back pain within the past 3 months, at any given time.  Low back pain often occurs due to overuse, strain or injury.  This includes too much bending, lifting and twisting.

How can you prevent low back pain?  Keep your stomach, back and leg muscles strong and flexible.  Don’t slouch – keep good posture.  Use good body positioning at work, home and during leisure activities.  When lifting, keep the load close to your body.  Ask for help when lifting heavy objects.  Maintain a regular physical fitness regimen.

Physical therapists can help someone experiencing low back pain.  Not all low back pain is the same.  Your therapist can tailor a treatment that will suit your specific condition.  Your therapist will ask questions about your specific condition and will thoroughly examine you for problems with posture, strength, joint mobility, and movement.  Attention will be given to how you use your body during work, home, sports, and leisure activities.  Your therapist will develop a plan to treat your back pain.  Treatments may consist of manual therapy techniques to improve mobility of soft tissues, specific strengthening and flexibility exercises, and education about care of your back.
