Rooks County Health Center has recently received a new portable bladder scanner thanks to a generous donation from John Stahl and Geri Stahl of Stahl Products LLC, as a tribute to the care their parents receive at RCH.
The bladder scanner was a request made by JoAnn Schauvliege, a nurse practioner who provides some week-end coverage for RCH Emergency Room and Saturday Urgent care clinic, along with RCH nurse managers. Schauvliege actually gave the first donation towards the purchase of the bladder scanner. “The ultrasound unit quickly measures bladder volume levels, which will allow our medical staff to make more accurate assessments without the invasive catherization procedure,” stated Schauvliege.
A bladder scanner is used to check the amount of urine in the bladder by creating a full ultrasound image of the patient’s bladder and then precisely calculating and displaying the amount of urine inside it. This information is useful to medical providers who diagnose, treat and manage urinary conditions. Traditionally, patients had to be catheterized multiple times to check for urine volume and retention. The new scanner eliminates the in-and-out catheterization and is more comfortable for the patient. Studies have shown that by using a bladder scanner and reducing the number of times a patient is catheterized also reduces the risk of urinary track infections and other difficulties. Rooks County Health Center is excited to offer this new technology as we continue to provide the highest quality of care to our patients.
