During the last year, volunteers of Rooks County Health Center almost equaled the hours worked by two full time employees. The five members of Rooks County Health Center’s Board of Directors, chaplains who participate in the chaplain program and over 100 auxiliary member volunteers gave more than 2,080 hours of caring assistance to patients, their families, hospital staff and communities throughout Rooks County.
Since 1974, America has celebrated the work and generosity of volunteers. This year’s theme for National Volunteer Week (April 27 – May 3) is “Volunteer to Change the World,” reflecting the power of volunteers to inspire the people they help while inspiring others to serve. Through their efforts and spirit, Rooks County Health Center’s volunteer Board of Directors, auxiliary members and chaplains improve the county and set examples for other communities.
President Ronald Reagan gave eloquent praise to volunteers when he said, “The spirit of volunteerism is deeply ingrained in us as a nation…the American people understand that there are no substitutes for gifts of service given from the heart.” Every U.S. President since Nixon has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week. Additionally, governors, mayors and other elected officials make public statements and sign proclamations in support of National Volunteer Week.
Whether at hospitals, nursing homes, non-profit agencies, associations, churches or schools, volunteers make a difference each day by making life better for others. It’s important to thank volunteers not only this week but throughout the year for their efforts.
