The low roar will soon be heard as a steady stream of motorcycles make their way through four Kansas counties. Ride for the Future 2, a benefit for Rooks County Health Center, begins at 1p.m. Sunday, June 8 in Plainville.
While most participants will choose to ride motorcycles, others will take cars, trucks and even a limousine, which is open to the first 10 to sign-up at the hospital. Like a poker run, participants will buy tickets and make stops along the route. Unlike a poker run, participants will draw numbered tiles at the stops in Stockton, Hill City, WaKeeney, Ellis and Hays. The ticket with the most points will receive $400 with second place receiving $200 and the ticket with the least points wins $100. There will also be a 50/50 drawing.
“Despite the cool temperatures at the last ride, everyone had a great time. There were people already asking at the ride last year if we could do it again this year,” stated Kandie Morain, one of the event organizers.
Ride for the Future 2 organizers are especially excited to announce that all proceeds will go towards purchasing a flagpole to stand in front of the new hospital along U.S. Highway 183. The desired flagpole and accompanying lighting, which will allow the flag to fly continuously, is commercial grade and carries a price tag of over $6,000. Stockton and Plainville VFW Posts have already made generous donations to RCH for the flagpole.
Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. at Stahl Products in Plainville. Cost is $10 per ticket or $25 for three tickets. Commemorative T-shirts will be available for $10 before and during the ride. Gella’s Diner & Lb. Brewing Co. in Hays will serve as the last stop offering a special on variety platters of their signature appetizers.
Several area businesses contributed to this event either through serving as a stop along the route or donating money for prizes. Sponsors include Stahl Products, Steve’s Electric and Roustabout Service, Ruder Oil Company, Autowash, LLC, The Finish Line, Convenience Express of WaKeeney, Gella’s Diner & Lb. Brewing Co. and The Duckblind Tavern. Mark Greene and Dale Sims have lent a tremendous amount of expertise and help in making the event possible.
