Spring is the welcome season of hope and gratitude for new life and new beginnings. It is the perfect time of year to celebrate the life-affirming service and generosity given by healthcare volunteers every day of the year. National Volunteer Week (April 15th – 21st) focuses public attention on one of America’s greatest assets – our volunteers – and the wonderful things they do to improve our communities.
National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing an annual celebration of volunteerism. President Ronald Reagan gave eloquent praise to volunteers when he said, “The spirit of volunteerism is deeply ingrained in us as a nation…The American people understand that there are no substitutes for gifts of service given from the heart.” Since then, every U.S. President has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week. Additionally, governors, mayors and other elected officials make public statements and sign proclamations in support of National Volunteer Week. Volunteering is a gift to the community and the rewards are profound.
The volunteers at Rooks County Health Center inspire others to serve by their example. Through their efforts and spirit Rooks County Health Center’s auxiliary members are truly inspirational. During the past year auxiliary member volunteers gave more than 1,370 hours of caring assistance to patients, their families, hospital staff and communities throughout Rooks County.
Whether at hospitals, nursing homes, churches, schools, non-profit agencies and associations, volunteers make a difference each day by making things better for others. When you visit these places, please be sure to thank the volunteers for everything they do.
Volunteering can offer you the chance to learn new skills, develop new interests, make new friends and enjoy enriching experiences while helping people in need.
