The first ever “Ride for the Future” started out a bit chilly, but that didn’t stop 100 bikers, public transportation van riders and car drivers from parading across western Kansas to have some fun and help raise money for the new hospital.

“We really appreciate what these great people are doing and how they promote the area and the hospital. Rooks County Health Center cannot thank you enough for coming out here this morning to help raise funds for our new hospital,” shared Kathy Ramsay, RN, Communication and Development Director at RCH, with the group before the ride began.

Kandie Morain, who was inspired by her dad’s love of benefit rides, was the mastermind of the event.  Morain visited with veteran riders Dale Sims and Gary Knight to organize the “Ride for the Future”.

“The $1,600 proceeds from this ride will help purchase beds, some of the equipment needed and help the thousands of patients who choose to have their health care needs met at our hospital.  Fundraisers like this help reduce the amount of money we are borrowing for the new hospital,” said Ramsay.

Winners of the prize monies were: 1st place, Janae Ryan, Hays; 2nd place, Tonya Bethel, Plainville; and last place with lowest score, Jeremiah Brown, Plainville.  Ryan Rozean won $75 in the 50/50 drawing.

Aces and Eights in Plainville invited the participants to end the benefit ride with a prime rib dinner and dance at their restaurant.

Several members of the hospital staff and their families were part of the pit crew, agreeing to work and make the pieces fit. These individuals included Kathy Lynch, Janet Languein, Casey Arnhold and her sons, Jake and John, Lisa Rozean and her son Ryan and Glen Cain.  Other staff members helping with this event were Brandy Wilkerson, Francie Benedick, Julie Price, Laurie Augustine and June Karlin.

An event like this can’t happen without the generous support of great local sponsors. Stahl Products, Ruder Oil, and Auto Wash LLC donated the prize money and helped fund other portions of the ride.  The Duck Blind in Stockton, Bo’s Landing in Ellis, The Finish Line in Hill City, Convenience Express in WaKeeney, Doerfler Harley Davidson in Hays and Aces and Eights of Plainville allowed the participants to stop off at their place of business and provided door prizes for the event.  Green Ink of Plainville printed “Ride for the Future” T-shirts at a discounted price. And, Jeff Miller a representative of the Christian Motorcyclist Association led the group in a prayer for a safe and enjoyable ride.

“RCH’s mission is to provide quality health care to all who need it, regardless of their ability to pay.  The success of “Ride for the Future” helps RCH and Rooks County in more ways than anyone could ever imagine,” said Ramsay.

Just like the private citizens who saw the need for a hospital in the county founded RCH more than 50 years ago as a result of fundraising efforts, the riders and contributors of “Ride for the Future” are allowing RCH to exist thanks to their generosity.
